How To Properly Wake and Bake

You might have heard of rise and shine, but have you heard of wake and bake?

For some people, once you wake up, the first thing you want is a coffee, to exercise, or even go back to sleep.

For stoners, smoking a bong or joint or eating an edible first thing after a good night’s sleep is better than any other morning remedy.

You might be thinking that the last thing you would want to do when trying to leave your bed is getting stoned. But the morning ritual has a solid following.

What is Wake and Baking?

The general rule for a wake and bake is to consume marijuana, in any form, but traditionally by smoking within five to ten minutes after your body leaves the bed. It’s a morning ritual that holds true for a lot of people from all over the world. In 2017, the Global Drug Survey (GDS) recorded and analyzed data from 69,299 marijuana users worldwide.

One of the categories studied showed that 21.9 percent of people in the US smoke or ingest marijuana within the first five to 60 minutes after waking.

Canada came in fourth with 14.9 percent of their census saying they wake and bake. However, countries like Scotland, where weed is still illegal, recorded 13 percent of their census partake in smoking upon waking.

Now, if you’re picturing that this is just a fad that a bunch of unproductive stoners preach, you might find that you are amazed where the idea and term to wake and bake came from.

Where Does the Term Originate?

Okay, so maybe calling the originators of waking and baking stoners is pretty accurate. Calling them unproductive couldn’t be any less true, though.

The 1960s saw a lot of bands ride to fame who would openly celebrate smoking weed. The ’60s as a decade pretty much marked marijuana socially.

But one band stood out from the rest with their message of smoking weed as soon as you wake up. The Grateful Dead, a very popular rock band throughout the ’60s and ’70s and still seen as one of the greatest rock bands today, is said to be the pushing force to wake and bake’s popularity.

With strong beliefs in waking and baking, especially on 420, the American rockers influenced thousands to try it for themselves.

Today, the rest is history and to wake and bake is just as common as bacon and eggs in the morning.

What Are the Effects of Wake & Bake?

Kind of like drinking a nice cold glass of water as soon as you wake up, smoking a joint first thing in the morning hits differently.

After sleeping, your body has had time to recover and (hopefully) all your stress from the previous day is gone. This leaves an empty body for the THC to affect.

Because you have been asleep, you haven’t had any food or nutrients enter your body for a while, making the weed seem more potent than if you had eaten before smoking.

The cannabinoids in your brain also have nothing else to compete against. It’s similar to how coffee affects people more in the morning because it has nothing to contend with.

On the flip side, it’s similar to how alcohol can affect your body when you haven’t eaten. So be aware that your wake and bake may feel more potent than smoking later in the day.

How to Wake and Bake the Right Way

Wake & bake has been taken to extremes over the years by people who believe it to be a way of life.

From these die-hard wakers and bakers, there have been a few how-to rules set that make sense if you are going to get high in the morning.

1. Make Sure Your Schedule Is Clear

This should be pretty obvious. Mundane tasks are okay, but if you have a day full of high stress and essential duties, then maybe you should reassess.

2. Pick an Appropriate Strain

If you want to energize yourself for the day, make sure you are smoking or ingesting a weed strain that will do so. Especially if you don’t want to melt yourself, then try and go to work.

This is also an excellent time to remind you to smoke to your tolerance. You don’t want to green out first thing in the morning.

3. Shower and Brush Your Teeth After

This might seem like a no-brainer, but sometimes your brain is on autopilot when you wake up, and the next minute you are shampooing your hair.

Having a shower with a buzz is a great feeling. It will also make you feel fresh as you continue to crush your morning.

4. Dress Appropriately

Like smoking weed at any point in the day, when you wake & bake, your clothes will take in the smell of marijuana smoke

This might not be a problem if you keep things pretty low-key. If you’re heading to work, though, maybe wait to put on your office wear.

5. Enjoy a Tasty Breakfast

Weed and food: there aren’t many things in this world that complement each other just as well. So treat yourself to a delicious breakfast.

If you’re a bit hopeless once you are stoned, prepare your breakfast the night before. It will save time and make your morning even more chill.

6. Drink Water

This goes for whenever you smoke weed, and even more so when smoking it in the morning. Keeping hydrated when stoned means your experience will be smoother.

It will also help you avoid cottonmouth while you’re at your desk, as well as getting the munchies at work.

7. Keys, Wallet, Watch … Eye Drops

Before leaving the house, the final step should be to use eye drops, especially if you are prone to red-eye.

Avoiding bloodshot eyes can help your mental state as well. You won’t feel like people know you are stoned if your eyes aren’t red.

Pros of Wake and Bake

It does sound risky to smoke weed before starting your day, but there are some excellent reasons why you should wake & bake.

If done right, smoking some ganja in the morning will lift your mood and start your morning off positive.

Surprisingly, it will also help you get out of bed. Instead of laying under the covers, wanting to slip back into a dream, you will start to think about your day, and it also helps people focus.

It’s going to make breakfast taste better, too. That alone could get most people to wake and bake.

One of the most popular reasons for a wake and bake is that you experience a stronger high than you would later in the day.

These are all great reasons to smoke or ingest weed in the morning. But, of course, sometimes it doesn’t go smoothly, and you may experience some of the following.

Cons of Wake and Bake

Like many trends in weed culture, there is a little trial and error when it comes to bringing weed into everyday life.

Sometimes smoking in the morning will mean that you get sleepy earlier in the day because you never really got the day going in the first place.

Distractions, the same as you get when smoking a lot of weed, can also slow your day down and cause lower productivity.

The big one for people is that it will build up their tolerance, and it can make smoking later in the day less enjoyable.

If a wake and bake doesn’t agree with you, you might find that you need a different strain to get you out of bed and into action.
