Hydroponics Guide For Beginners

Using a basic hydroponics system to grow your cannabis at home can give you a fantastic harvest. And the best news of all is that building your very own hydro setup isn’t nearly as hard as it might sound. If you follow the steps in this hydroponics for dummies guide, you’ll be ready to start growing your own high-yield cannabis all year long.

Part 1 of 2: Build a Hydroponics System

Materials You’ll Need:

1. Cut Holes Into The Plastic Tote

Arrange your net pots on the lid of the tote so that they’re equally spaced out. Now use your marker to trace around the bottom of each pot.

You should now have eight circles traced out on the lid. Use your box cutter or your drill with a hole saw attachment to cut out each of the circles carefully.

We will outline the second of four steps on the next page.

 2. Position Your Air Pump

Set the aquarium air stone at the bottom of the tote. Hook it up to the air pump. You may need to use your drill to drill a hole toward the top of the tote through which you can run the air pump hose.

Let’s take a look at the third step on the next page!

 3. Fill Tote

Fill Tote With Water

Straightforward enough. Just fill it up with water.

Tip: If the sides of your tote start to bow out as it fills up with water, you may need to make one quick adjustment.

Use your drill to drill holes into the top of the lid and the sides of the tote. The holes should line up so that you can run a zip tie through both holes; this will eventually help seal the lid shut and keep the sides from bowing.

Drill pairs of holes in each corner of the lid, as well as halfway down the length of the tote.

One last step and you’re all set!

4. Attach Lid

Now put the lid back onto the tote. If you need to use the zip tie adjustment, now is the time to zip tie it into place.

Your basic hydroponics system is now ready to go. The air pump will circulate oxygen and nutrients through the water and to the roots of your plants. Throughout the growing process, you can also add plant food to the water.

We wrote an in-depth article about growing your own cannabis with a hydroponic system. You can read it here. On the last page, we will link an extensive video guide that will help you build your own hydroponics system at home.

Hydroponics Video Guide

Here’s a complete video guide demonstrating how you can create an inexpensive hydroponics system at home:

This video guide by Scott Dekarske of Wet-Werk Hydroponics in Memphis, TN, and Master Gardener, Stephan Leonard, show how you how you can assemble an inexpensive aeroponics system at home. Their system is a bit more complicated than the one we just covered in this article. Nonetheless, with their excellent video guide, you’ll be able to do the same thing at home without a big hustle. It only takes a few hours to assemble this system. For the complete parts list or to see how the plants have grown, visit their website!
