Let’s take a closer look at what you can do with your stems.
The stems of the cannabis plant are frequently overlooked but may be used for many different things.
We wrote an article about all the different options your stems provide. You can read it here.
In this article, we will focus on cannabis stem butter. Creating it is super simple and it only requires a few materials.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredients For Marijuana Stem Butter
- Cannabis stems- as much as you can get (at least ¼ cup per person).
- Unsalted butter – 250 g
- Water – 300 ml + 50 ml per hour
You will also need some everyday household items:
- If you have one, a saucepan or cooking pot – with a heavy bottom.
- Colander – cheesecloth or clean tea towel
Once you have all the ingredients and equipment ready, you can start making cannabis stem butter – follow our instructions.
Step One: Decarboxylation
The first step is a crucial one. If you decarboxylate your stems, you convert the THCA into THC to make it available to the human body. To do this, place your chopped stems on a baking tray and put them in the oven at 100-110 °C for 40 minutes. This activates the THCA by decarboxylating it and converting it into THC.

Step 2: Simmer In Butter
In the next step, melt the butter over medium heat and add 300 ml of water before bringing it to a simmer. Once it is simmering, add the stalks and stir.
Now the waiting begins. The longer you let it steep, the stronger the cannabutter will be. However, 3-4 hours is enough to reach a decent potency. Stir every 15 minutes or so and add 50 ml of water every hour or when you notice that there is only butter and stalks left in the pot.
Step 3: Pour Off
Once you have waited as long as possible, place a cheesecloth or clean tea towel over a heat-resistant container and secure it with string. Then slowly pour the cannabutter into the cloth and let the butter drip into the container. When the butter stops flowing, bunch the edges of the cloth and squeeze it tightly to squeeze out as much butter as possible.
Now you have to put the container in the fridge and wait until the butter has set. In a few hours, you will see that the butter has formed a layer on the water. Simply remove the butter and store it in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.
How Potent Is Cannabis Stem Butter?
Even though making cannabutter from stems works, it is not as strong as cannabutter from flowers or leaves, as the stems contain less THC. To get around this, use as many stems as you can get your hands on. Another great way to use stems is to add them to flower or leaves when making regular cannabutter. This adds a certain potency to each batch and tastes better than cannabutter made from stems alone.
