Harold & Kumar 4 Is Officially in the Works — Original Cast Expected to Return

It’s finally happening — Harold & Kumar are coming back to the big screen for a fourth wild ride.

A new installment in the cult-favorite stoner comedy franchise is officially in development, with original writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg set to direct. The duo will also co-write the screenplay alongside Josh Heald, with Mandate Pictures (owned by Lionsgate) producing the film.

While deals are still being finalized, both Kal Penn and John Cho are expected to reprise their iconic roles as Harold Lee and Kumar Patel — the lovable, blunt-smoking best friends who’ve been at the heart of the series since 2004’s Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. It remains unknown whether Neil Patrick Harris, whose legendary cameo appearances became a signature part of the series, will return.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Hurwitz and Schlossberg promised fans a return to form:

“We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all. It’s high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don’t tell their kids.”

The franchise — which began with Harold and Kumar’s legendary munchies-fueled trek to White Castle — became an unexpected hit, leading to Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008) and A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (2011).

Kal Penn has often expressed enthusiasm about making a fourth film, telling Variety back in 2020:

“We would love to do a fourth movie. John Cho and I text about it all the time… We all would love to do one. I think we all, thankfully, have the blessing of being really busy right now and want to find the right venue and the right timing.”

With production now moving forward, it looks like fans won’t have to wait much longer for another smoke-filled adventure. No release date has been set yet, but buzz is already building fast.
