We live in incredible times. With weed delivery services available in more and more states, you don’t have to go to a dispensary to get your cannabis anymore. But did you know that you may not even need to leave your house to get a medical marijuana card in the first place?
You read that right. There are many US states in which you can get certified for a medical marijuana card online, without ever stepping foot outside. And the best part? In most states, the process is quick, simple, and best of all, HIPAA compliant.
So how do you go about getting your medical marijuana card without putting on pants? All it takes are a few simple steps and you are the proud owner of a medical cannabis license — in certain states, you can even get a temporary card within minutes of speaking to a doctor.
How do you get your medical marijuana card online?
Assuming you are eligible for a medical marijuana card, here’s what you do. For the sake of this explanation, we’ll pretend you live in California, but the process is very similar in most other states.
- Visit the website of Leafwell and pick your state from the dropdown list at the top of the page.
- Register online with Leafwell and speak to a state-licensed physician or qualifying health professional (such as an advanced practice nurse or physician’s assistant).
- Get approved and instantly download your doctor’s recommendation.
- Use that doctor’s recommendation, to shop at any California dispensary and save on sales tax.
- You will receive your medical card and original certificate with the seal within 5-7 days
Just a word of advice: The approval process in California is incredibly fast and many other states do require you to actually register with their state’s online program before you can get your official medical marijuana card. In many cases, you still get a temporary license within 24 hours before receiving your actual license after between 5-7 days.

In which states does Leafwell provide online medical marijuana card recommendations?
While Leafwell helps patients get a medical marijuana card in every state with a medical marijuana program, the telehealth platform is only available in about half of those states. In the following states you can get your MMJ card online:
- Florida (renewal only)
- New York
- Rhode Island
What documentation do you need?
In most medical marijuana states, photo ID issued by your state, proof of residence, and your medical records are enough to qualify. You should obviously get all of those ready before booking your online appointment to make getting your card as quick and easy as possible.
Since the appointments are telemedicine appointments, you’ll also need some internet-connected device with a working camera and microphone. Did you notice that we didn’t mention pants anywhere? Just keep the camera above your waist.
So what about the other states?
As mentioned earlier, not every state with a medical program currently allows you to get your initial recommendation for a medical marijuana card via telehealth. You can still book an appointment through Leafwell in any state with a medical marijuana program, but that appointment will likely take place in-person. In some states, only the initial appointment has to be in person and follow-up appointments can be done online.
